After Hours Procedures

If your child is very ill, has had a severe injury or blow to the head, has bleeding that is excessive, or has trouble breathing, or for any other emergency, call 911 immediately. If the condition is not as severe, and cannot wait until the next day, promptly take your child to the nearest Emergency Department or consider taking your child to an Urgent Care Clinic (Urgent Care usually means 'same-day' treatment). Urgent care clinics are generally open until 10PM every night.

If your child is sick and you are not sure whether the condition can wait until the next day when the office opens, or if you have a medical question of urgent concern, it is advisable to call our office during the day, or call a Nurse Triage Service after-hours or in the middle of the night, until 8 am. If necessary, the Nurse Triage service can reach Dr. Bjork, or another doctor on-call for Sea Breeze Pediatrics.

Every PPO health plan has a Nurse Triage line that can be called 24/7 365 days per year. This number is usually listed on your insurance card, or may be reached through the 24-hour customer service line. The numbers listed below will contact the Nurse Triage Service for the following PPO plans, but which may not include all PPO plans:

For emergencies call 911. If there is no immediate life-threatening danger, then proceed to take your child to the nearest Emergency Department, preferably at a hospital with Pediatric inpatient care, such as Rady's Children's Hospital.

FOR POISON INGESTION THE NUMBER FOR THE POISON CONTROL CENTER IS: 800-222-1222.

For after-hours problems, most PPO insurance carriers have their own "Nurse Triage Line" available 24/7. For examples:

  • Anthem: 800-224-0336
  • Blue Shield: 877-304-0504
  • Healthnet: 800-893-5597

  • United Health Care: Call the Customer Care number on the back of your card to speak with a nurse after hours for urgent information, or go to myuhc.com for live Nurse Chat.

If your child is ill and you are not sure if you need to take him to the Emergency Department in the middle of the night, call our office number and have the on-call Doctor paged to help with that decision.
